Republican and Democratic Runoff Primary                  Elections  - Tuesday, May 22, 2018

What is a Primary Election? In Texas, primary elections are conducted by the major political parties (Republican and Democratic) to determine their nominees for a given elective office in advance of the November General Election.                                                                             • Texas primaries are open, meaning a voter does not have to be registered as a member of a party to participate in a primary election. Voters in Texas must sign a pledge when voting declaring that they will not vote or participate in another party's primary or convention in this voting year.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Winners in primary elections in Texas are determined by majority vote. In the case that no candidate receives more than the 50 percent of votes cast, the top two candidates proceed to a runoff election on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
