[ARCHIVED] Update from the County Judge Regarding December 26 Tornado

The Ellis County Emergency Management Coordinator and Fire Marshal, Red Oak Fire Chief, and Red Oak Police Chief are coordinating operations across the County to assess the damage caused by this evening’s tornado and to ensure the safety of residents in the affected area.

With reported wind gusts of up to 105 mph, the National Weather Service issued a tornado alert at 5:28 p.m. At approximately 6:01 pm, a tornado touched down in the northeastern area of Midlothian, Ovilla, Glenn Heights and Red Oak area before continuing north of the County line.

A collaborative effort of multiple agency first responders conducted a primary search of the disaster area in order to provide immediate assistance. There have been no reported fatalities or major injuries.

Initial assessments indicated partial or total destruction of 40 homes. 2300 homes are without power and ONCOR is working in conjunction with other power companies to restore service.

A secondary search is currently underway and further assessment of the damages will be made later this morning.

DPS and local law enforcement are securing and limiting access to the areas that sustained damage.

The Red Cross is providing assistance to displaced families and the Texas Baptist Men is coordinating volunteer efforts to aid the victims.

Downed power lines and debris have created hazards. In the interest of everyone’s safety, the public is being requested to avoid these areas as crews work diligently to clear the dangers and restore power.

An additional briefing will be held Sunday December 27 at 9:00 am at the Red Oak ISD Administration Center parking lot located at 109 West Red Oak Road. A media pool will immediately follow.
